The Best Toys for German Shepherds

When it comes to German Shepherds, exercise and playtime is an absolute must. You should spend a good portion of your time together exercising your dog, not only by walking, but through playing, as well. Whether you enjoy playing fetch with your dog or allowing him or her to let their intelligence shine through with toys that stimulate their minds, it’s always a great thing to have plenty of toys on hand for your companion.

Size Matters
Go to any pet store or online and you will see an abundance of toys available for purchase. Look at the difference between the toys aimed at smaller breeds, and those for larger breeds, such as the German Shepherd. Since we definitely come into the ‘bigger’ category your dog will obviously require bigger toys – those that can handle more robust play! Be careful of any toys geared toward smaller breeds can easily become a choking hazard, so make sure you pick a size that will be appropriate for your dog.

Choice
If your budget allows try to select several toys – ones that you can play with together, and ones that your dog can use to entertain themselves when you aren’t around. Also a selection allows a dog to play with different ones through out their day.

Kong Extreme Toy
Depending on your breed’s size, there is a variety of this classic toy suitable almost everyone. From small to extra large, the Kong is one of the most widely popular dog toys available on the market. It’s brilliant as a toy for German Shepherds, because it exercises the mind and gives them a way to show off their smarts! Just put some treats inside (the company makes several different kinds), and you will be helping your dog ease their boredom! It’s made from super durable material, so it’s safe even for the toughest dogs!
Chuckit! Ultra Ball
This is a favorite of ours! Especially when used with the special launcher (sold separately). A great toy that gives lots of fun and provides much needed exercise for all but the most athletic of dogs. Like the Kong it comes in a variety of sizes. The Chuckit! Ultra Ball is a great to help exercise your dog’s body and it’s a great way to play together and bond with your dog. Of course you have the option of simply throwing the ball without the launcher. These balls are designed for larger breeds, made out of high quality material, and are great for bouncing and using in the water.

Goughnuts – Indestructible Chew Toy MAXX

This is one of the more indestructible toys you’ll find and is an interactive chew toy.  The stick is being used by Police K9 units around the world and truly has become a hit. Best of all they are guaranteed for life – the two layered technology, and their guarantee, are investments in your dog’s safety.

A toy for older dogs!  We love this KONG Senior which has been made from their Made from our specially formulated KONG Senior rubber; Ideal for aging teeth and jaws.

Older dogs still like to catch and have something to chew and ‘mouth’ on and this toy is also great to re-establish play and exercise.

The Kong is ideal for stuffing with treats and snacks and is recommended around the world by vveterinarians, dog trainers and also dog behavior experts

These are just a few, but since there are many different dog toys on the market, it’s always best to experiment with different types until you find things that your dog likes. You will find they all have their own individual preferences, and these toys give you a great way to keep their mind and body exercised and happy.

Let us know you and your dog’s favorites so we can share with our GSD community.
