Serving size: 18 ounces

Preparation time: 20 minutes

Ingredients:

1 fennel bulb, small, organic
2 carrots, small, organic
1 sweet potato, big, organic
1 teaspoon flaxseed oil
1 pound chicken gizzards, from free range chickens

Preparation:

1. Wash the fennel and carrots well with water and cut into small cubes. Peel the sweet potato and also cut into small cubes. In a medium saucepan, boil all three vegetables, covered with water until soft, for approx. 15 minutes.
2. Rinse the chicken gizzards and cut into small pieces. In another saucepan, boil for 15 minutes. Drain off water and let cool.
3. Drain the water (keep some of it) from the vegetables and blend in blender or pulse in a food processor until obtaining a mashed potato like consistency. If needed, blend in some of the reserved cooking water. Add the flaxseed oil and mix.
4. Serve the mashed vegetables with the chicken gizzards on top.

Health benefits:

Fennel is often used as an herbal treatment for colic and flatulence in dogs, is high in antioxidants, which makes it interesting for cancer prevention. Important to mention also its anti-inflammatory properties.

Carrots are known for their high vitamin A and beta-carotene content which improves not only a rabbits’ coat, color and eyesight, but also your dogs.
Sweet potatoes are a great source of dietary fiber for your dog, contain beta carotene, vitamin B6 and C and manganese.

Per ounce, chicken gizzards contain 35 calories from protein and 10 from fat. They also contain vitamin B12, iron and zinc and therefore make an excellent addition to homemade dog food recipes.

Flaxseed oil is often used as a supplement for dogs, to help with skin and coat.
